From a City Jail to a Heritage Museum

Like humans, buildings likewise experience past lives. The remarkable rebirth of built environments present themselves in various shapes and sizes.

Do you believe in reincarnation? Although controversies surrounding this debatable topic abound, there are actual case studies that have proven its existence. In fact, a fair number of people have claimed immersing in a previous life, riding the wave of transformations be it good or bad. Architecture is not so different.

Shifting from the Old to the New

Despite witnessing lots of incredible buildings during my adventurous travels around the planet, I've encountered quite a few edifices with compelling stories to share right on my own doorstep.

Today, we will explore the infamous Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, a historic prison that no longer functions nowadays but has evolved into a monumental institution of celebrated Cebuano traditions bearing the esteemed title of Museo Sugbo.

The first time I visited this significant landmark of antiquity, I had the impression that it was an aged mansion owned by a wealthy aristocrat. During their prime, these types of residences typically embraced colonial-inspired designs, imposing strong architectural characters when approached from their facades. I had no idea that this historic edifice kept a mysterious past.

Rewinding back the Clock

From the roadside, I smiled as its centuries-old walls greeted me. With restless feet, I was about to access an enigmatic portal of historic proportions and I didn't know what to expect. Yet, I was ready to receive the complete range of interesting stories waiting for me inside.

As I entered the entry gates and stepped onto its front terrace, massive cannons welcomed me. These historic weapons, although suitable to be situated in forts and battlefields, had a meaningful purpose. They signified a true sense of national security, respecting the building’s historical narrative while maintaining the current museum’s distinguished reputation. It was a strategic move.

An improvised garden also enhanced the courtyard’s appearance. It added to the site’s heartwarming reception of important guests - a crucial element of hospitality. Thus, my guards were down regardless of the intimidating effect the cannons had on me.

For history buffs, a metal plaque was especially installed on the upper walls. It highlighted the fundamental life of the said building, stating official proof of its epic conversion from a prison to a museum. Add this valuable nugget of knowledge to your mental library.

As I wandered deeper through its dark interior corridor linking the establishment's central courtyard, I came across an antique water well. Not sure what it was for, but it must have been another demonstration of the site’s historic legacy. (I forgot to read the tiny info board attached to it)

Now that I was completely swallowed by the landmark’s enclosing fortifications, I couldn't escape the thought of paranormal possibilities. With my previous experiences of ghostly encounters, I tried not to be bothered by these likely scenarios. On the contrary, I was more interested with the museum’s priceless collections of historical pieces. Coming up next…

Delighting in Iconic Artifacts of Culture

This was the most awaited episode of my personal tour of Museo Sugbo. Countless objects of historical relevance were on exhibit, showcasing the tremendous richness of Cebu’s local heritage. Although this wasn't a comprehensive coverage of all the curated items there, I've highlighted most of the noteworthy pieces of interest for your awareness.

From pure gold ornaments, household appliances, photographic devices, ancient currency, office equipment, including historical facts about Cebuano lifestyle during the colonial period and World War II, these spectacular objects opened my eyes, heart, and mind to the profound heritage of Cebu amassed after numerous generations. It was literally a sensual feast!

Moreover, influential Cebuano personalities, owing to their incredibly impressive talents, skills, and services offered to their respective industries, were also recognized for their significant contributions. These were inspiring moments for me since I personally knew some of them - either having met them in the flesh or knowing them through mutual connections. I couldn't be more honored of my homegrown heritage!

Most importantly, how could I ignore the religious heritage of Cebu? Being the original cradle of Christianity in Asia and holding the official record of being the oldest metropolis in the Philippines, this historic address has also evolved into a world-class destination for people from all walks of life.

Relevant museum pieces that supported these factual events were a scaled church model of Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu and the nearby Magellan's Cross, the original location of the Catholic faith’s birth. Visual depictions of the historic battle between Ferdinand Magellan, a famous global explorer, and Lapu-Lapu, a respected local chieftain, were also noticed. Marvelous!

Returning to the Real World

It seemed that a single day wasn't enough for me to digest everything. Hence, I resolved to come back in the near future to fully satisfy my pending questions, eventually laying my curiosities to rest.

On my way out, I unexpectedly met 2 adorable felines that were dosing off, unaware of busy passersby. The white cat turned out to be the more affectionate one. Being a pet-lover myself, it was a chance to play with these cute creatures.

Wow, what a nostalgic journey! Words were not enough to describe how I felt during my exploration of Museo Sugbo. And as much as I would have loved to linger longer inside, it was time to exit. On my way out, I waved goodbye and thanked the museum staff for their outstanding hospitality. Until next time…
